A little Bosch, a little Schiaparelli, a little H.R. Giger; it's Alasdair Gray's novel (which is a sibling of but distinct from Yorgos Lanthimos's movie in key secret ways I won't spoil, and a delight in its own right, GO READ IT) plus Shona Heath and James Price's brilliance. This is what I always want steampunk to be and it never is, quite - an historic take on the future that yes-ands itself at every turn and then turns inside out and does it again, the love child of an artificial cuttlefish and a Rube Goldberg machine. How is this a ship and a wunderkammer and a fetish club and an operating theater all at once?!
